Greetings from The League Camping & Therapeutic Recreation!
It is hard to believe it has been over a month since camp has ended! I am sure everyone has been busy returning to their routine of school and work. We have received many program evaluations from campers and families and the feedback has been extremely positive. We have gotten more “excellent” ratings in Overall Camp Experience than from the last 4 summers. Thank you to the staff of 2006 that worked so hard to make each camper's experience at camp a successful one. You truly made a lasting imprint on each camper's life! I hope that is something you always remember.
It is my goal to email you all updates and news about Camping & Therapeutic Recreation every month or so… that way we all can stay in touch! If this is not your preferred email or you received this by a forward, please email me your email address to jrondeau@leagueforpeople.org . I do not want to leave anyone out!
Welcome NEW staff!
Bill Morgan joined the Camping & Therapeutic Recreation family on August 28 th as the Program Specialist, Community Recreation. Bill comes to us with a lot of experience in both camping and working with people with disabilities. He has been both the Director of Easter Seals Camp Fairlee Manor and a Program Coordinator for the Kent Center. Bill is in charge of our assisted travel, sailing and social events. He will be living at camp in the summer as well!
Kristin Rocks joins us as the Program Manager, Autism & Related Services. She will oversee the after school program here at The League for kids with autism and is helping to develop other support services. She has a lot of experience with children with disabilities and has a master's degree in counseling. She will not be at camp in the summer, but I am sure she will be up to visit!
Weekend Respite Program
Do you miss Greentop already? Then work our Weekend Respite program! This program was established due to the popularity of our Winter Camp program. Weekend Respite will take place October through April, so you can enjoy camp all year long!
Our Weekend Respite program not only includes 10 respite weekends October through May but also our Winter Camp program. Just like our summer camp program, all our off-season programming is designed to focus on what a person can do! Each program is themed and campers enjoy a wide variety of activities including sports, arts & crafts, cooking, nature and much more. All of our Weekend Respite programming will be held at the Patuxent River 4-H Center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Our Respite Counselors will work in teams to support the 5-6 participants in their assigned group. You will assist campers with their activities of daily living (showering, toileting, etc). You will also travel to programs such as cooking, arts and crafts, sports, nature exploration, dance or other special activities. Respite Counselors will also wear the “hat” of a program leader during parts of the weekend.
Weekend Respite begins at 4pm on Friday and end about 3pm on Sunday. The salary for the weekend ranges from $110-$130 for counselors and $80-$100 for junior counselors. Pay for Winter Camp is more due to the additional days worked. You are not expected to work all Weekend Respite programs, you can pick as few as one or as many as 10! We always welcome more for Winter Camp! You can find the list of dates and program themes on our website www.leagueforpeople.org under “Camping & Therapeutic Recreation.” Please email Emily ( ecarmichael@leagueforpeople.org ) a list of the weekends/programs you are interested in working NOW, so send Emily an email today (plus, she is addicted to the internet and loves a distraction).
