Bobby Williams

Bobby Williams has been working out at The League's Wellness Center since 1996. It's a healthful habit he never intends to break.

“The League keeps my body tight and my mind focused on staying strong,” Williams says. “I can come here and feel comfortable.”

In January 1996, Williams was shoveling snow off his back porch after a major storm and the awning collapsed, breaking his back in two places. “I damaged my spine and was in surgery for seven hours,” he says. “I have two iron rods in my back—my spinal cord was crushed, but not totally severed.” Williams has some movement and sensation in his legs, but mostly uses a wheelchair to get around. He also drives, operating his automobile via hand controls.

“I did my rehab at Good Samaritan and they use The League's pool. I liked the warm water workout so much I joined The League,” he says. “I love the atmosphere and the friendships I've formed over the years with people like Jimmy Young. I know that after my workout I can hang out and talk things over a bit with the people here.”

His determination and the exercise regimen had Williams back to work six months after the accident. “I worked as a bellman at the Hyatt Hotel downtown. My manager really pulled for me and said I could come back at a new position,” he relates. “And I did—I am now the Concierge, taking care of dinner reservations, giving directions, telling guests where to shop—whatever they need.”

Williams exercises at the Wellness Center three to four days a week and says it never gets boring or routine. “Oram [Fields, assistant director of the Wellness Center] puts me through the paces and keeps me challenged. Many people I met in 1996 still come to The League. A lot of times, you get tired of going to a certain gym or you lose your motivation. Not here. It's amazing.”
