The Wellness Center is proud to offer you The American Red Cross' six comprehensive course levels that teach you, your child and other family members how to swim skillfully and safely.

Note: The prerequisite for each level is successful demonstration of the skills from the previous level, except level one, which has no prerequisite.  We will provide certificates when each level is successfully completed.  For parents who want children to get an early introduction the water, we offer Parent-Child swim instruction for children 6 months - 5 years.  This class is also taught according to the American Red Cross standards. 

Swimming Lesson Sessions 2007

Session I: January 6 – February 10, make-up date February 17

Session II: February 24 - March 31, make up date April 7

Session III: April 14 - May 19, make up date May 26th

Session IV: June 2 - July 14, No lessons on July 7

Session V: July 21 - August 25, make up date September 8 (No lessons on September 1)

Session VI: September 15 - October 20, make up date October 27

Session VII: November 3- December 8, make up date December 15

Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Course Schedule:

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills - Saturday 1:30-2:00 p.m.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Saturday 1:00-1:50 p.m.
Level 3: Stroke Development - Saturday 2:00-2:50 p.m.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement - Saturday 2:00-2:50 p.m.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement - Saturday 3:00-3:50 p.m.

Parent-Child and Adaptive Swim Lesson Description and Schedule

Parent-Child Swim Instruction: Saturday 1:00-1:30 p.m.
For Parents who want children to get an early introduction to the water, we offer Parent-Child swim instruction for children 6 months - 5 years.

Adaptive Swim: Saturday 12:00-12:50 p.m.
We offer an adaptive swim program for children and adults with special needs. The program includes an introduction to the water and water adjustment activities. Participants in this program will be required to have a parent or an aide in the water to assist with activities.

Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Course Levels

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills

  • Basic water safety rules
  • Using a life jacket
  • Submerging mouth, nose and eyes
  • Opening eyes under water and picking up submerged object
  • Swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions
  • Recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help
  • Exhaling underwater
  • Floating on front and back

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills

  • Moving in the water while wearing a life jacket
  • Submerging entire head
  • Front and back glide
  • Treading water using arm and leg motions
  • Recognizing a swimmer in distress and getting help
  • Bobbing in the water
  • Jellyfish float
  • Swimming using combined stroke on front and back

Level 3: Stroke Development

  • Reaching assist
  • Submerging and retrieving an object
  • Front and back glide
  • Front and back crawl
  • Kneeling or standing dive (shallow dive progression)
  • Rotary breathing in horizontal position
  • Survival float, back float
  • Butterfly-kick and body motion

Level 4: Stroke Improvement

  • Safe diving rules
  • Dive from stride position or shallow dive
  • Survival float, back float
  • Elementary backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly
  • Throwing assist
  • Feet-first surface dive
  • Front and back crawl

Level 5: Stroke Refinement

  • Survival swimming
  • Standing dive (diving progression)
  • Open turns on front and back
  • Front and back crawl
  • Performing rescue breathing
  • Tuck surface dive and pike surface dive
  • Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn
  • Elementary backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, sidestroke

 

Private Swimming Lessons ($65/Regular Member, $60 Premier Member, $70 Non-Member)

One-on-one private lessons with a swimming instructor are great for beginners, those who need a little more attention or adults not ready for a group class. The best feature of private lessons is that they are scheduled around your hours! The lessons consist of four 30-minute sessions, by appointment only. Please contact The Wellness Center at (410)323-0500 Ext. 314 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

*Cancellation Policy: If an appointment is cancelled within 24 hours of the scheduled time of service, a refund will be issued to the member. If cancelled in less than 24 hours of schedule time of service or member does not keep their appointment, no refund will be issued.
