Weekend (Respite) Counselor

Position: Weekend (Respite) Counselor
Department: Camping & Recreation
Reports to: Manager, Camp Programs and/or Manager, Health Services
Exempt/Non Exempt: Seasonal, Year-Round
Summary: The Respite Counselor is responsible for providing daily support and guidance to the campers assigned to their group. Respite Counselors work cooperatively with other respite staff to foster camper independence while ensuring individual needs are met.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Live with assigned group of campers, assisting them with activities of daily living (ADL’s), including but not limited to showering, toileting, feeding, dressing, etc. as needed.

  • Ride bus with and assist participants as needed during transport, as assigned.

  • Accompany participants to scheduled programs, actively participating and engaging them.

  • Communicate effectively with other respite staff and/or camp administration regarding any camper or group concerns and/or programmatic needs in a timely manner.

  • Facilitate building camper self-esteem and socialization through positive interactions.

  • Work cooperatively with other respite staff to support campers, and to plan and initiate age-appropriate free time activities for the group as needed.

  • Be knowledgeable regarding the individualized needs of all campers assigned to you/your group, and take initiative to communicate any concerns regarding needs.

  • Ensure camper care is provided in a way that meets all local, state, and federal health department regulations as well as ACA standards and MDSE requirements.

  • Assist in completing Session Summaries and other paperwork in a way that meets all requirements of documentation for various funding sources.

  • Assist in facilitating camp programs, tailoring presented activities to each camper’s individual ability level.

  • Assist in weekend set up and clean up as needed.

  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings.

  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Manager, Camp Programs and/or Manager, Health Services.

Job Relationships:

The Respite Counselor works under the supervision of the Manager, Camp Programs and/or Manager, Health Services. The Respite Counselor works closely with an interdisciplinary team to support the various needs of the weekend respite program, and the assigned campers within each weekend.



  • Minimum age of 18

  • Ability to lift up participants up to 50 lbs. in accordance with established safe lifting procedures.

  • If driving: Valid driver’s license with no more than 3 points.


Education and/or experience:

  • Past camp or recreational experience preferred.

  • Past experience working with people with disabilities required.

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
